Nikolai Alexeev is the permanent conductor of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, where he took over from Mariss Jansons. As a student he was the winner of the Herbert von Karajan Competition in Berlin (1982), which allowed him to perform in Europe's most important concert halls. With the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra he performed in Germany, France and the United States. In the Netherlands he worked with the radio orchestras, with whom he performed the premier of Shostakovich's opera The Player, and with the Residentie Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He is permanent guest-conductor of the Gelders Orkest Arnhem.
